ok, fine. NBC's Parks and Recreation is too easily comparable to The Office which obviously puts it behind the funniest show on television. The show gets a lot of bad rap for not being "as funny as The Office." But this show is funny. There are too many good moments not to miss. However, I too often find that I'm still watching because I'm waiting to see the character April. A bitter, young intern chick who, spur of the moment, enters a beauty pageant for 200 dollars, throws office supplies at her boss when he is incapacitated by a hernia, and conducts an experiment of what gets you drunker: drinking a bottle of wine or not drinking a bottle of wine.

They both do an incredible job but Drew really steals the show. In case you don't already know... it's about Jackie Kennedy's high society relatives who let their estate in East Hampton go and end up living in squalor. At the third, final, and muddiest, day of the All Points West Festival in Jersey City on Sunday, Coldplay may have headlined as the final and most anticipated act, but Lykke Li was the girl on people's brains when leaving the fest that night. Coldplay and MGMT both put on great shows (even though it seemed very difficult for many festival heads to decide which band to commit to since they played at the same time). However, Lykke Li was definitely the star of All Points West as far as I'm concerned. She is truly a wild animal on stage. Factor in the Stevie Nicks-y drapery over the scandalous jumper and you're in love. Highlights of the show: Lykke Li rapped a portion of Lil Waynes, A Milli, to strobe lights and pounding base right after she told the crowd to spark their joints for her newest, unheard slow jam.

When i first listened to Regina Spektor's new album, Far, I thought "yeah pretty good, but it doesn't excite me like the last one." I was wrong. When I listened through the album a couple more times I really warmed up to it and decided that this quirky redhead really came up with something special. With lyrics like "the sea is just a wetter version of the skies" and "take off my tuna dress, put on my collard greens" how can you go wrong? The album is sweet, fun and clever. Nurse Jackie is my kinda woman. She's sassy, (even bitchy at times, but for good reason), sharp, strong, good, and still has a few vices she's not ready to give up. She's not perfect but even with the wrongdoings she continues to commit, she somehow makes us feel that she is close to perfect. Edie Falco does an excellent job of playing this character who is conflicted with what it means to be a saint. Can she snort painkillers and pour them into her coffee disguised as sweetener while still caring for her patients? The premiere episode ends with a perfect summary of what seems to be the theme of the first season: "Make me good God, but not yet."

The new nurse, Zoey, is an especially fun and adorably hysterical character, while the mildly evil, but lovable, Dr. O'hara plays a perfect counterpart to the naive Zoey. Not to mention Peter Facinelli's (Can't Hardly Wait) character who is a new doctor whose nervous tick manifests in inappropriate sexual touches. A million thumbs up for Nurse Jackie.

I was unsure from the beginning if Larry David would be fit for the big screen, but when I found out that one of my all-time favorite comedy writers/actors was set to star in a Woody Allen film I asked myself why I hadn't thought of pairing the two. It seems that they would make a perfect fit, and while many of the reviews for Whatever Works are little more than mediocre I am pumped that it's finally out in theaters. The trailer gets me excited at the thought of being able to watch LD for longer than a 30 minute Curb episode. FINALLYYY. Whether it's a mediocre film or not, I suspect that I will have a great time watching LD on the big screen and that his below-par acting skills will not be a problem.

Get Dragged To Hell

I know many may be skeptical of the new horror flick, Drag Me To Hell. However, I am encouraging everybody to... get dragged to hell. The film was written and directed by Sam Raimi, who also directed Spiderman and made a number of cult classic horror movies in the 80's called The Evil Dead. After reading a number of interviews and seeing the movie in theaters it is clear that Raimi's number one goal is to excite his audience. And he succeeded. I heard a number of kids in the theater saying at one point "is this supposed to be funny?" Yes, it is supposed to be funny. It's supposed to freak your shit too and it does. Some of the fight scenes are so ridiculous (such as when Alison Lohman staples the gypsy's eye shut) that while you are screaming from the scares you are also laughing at the ridiculous gags that Raimi purposely places. He also inserts a number of lines meant to make fun of the movie itself which adds to its entertainment value. It's scary and funny. It's fun. Get dragged to hell.

Have you ever been listening to music on your iPod (or whichever MP3 player you might own. God help you if it's not an iPod) and there are so many options on it that you find yourself thinking about all the other songs you might listen to next so that you can't fully appreciate the song currently playing; that song that you chose while you were listening to the previous song? Or have you been so eager to listen to the next option on your MP3 player that you skip to the next song before the current song has even finished? Or perhaps when you find you like a song by an artist you might download a few more select songs from that artist on iTunes; but rarely do you buy an entire album on iTunes. And rarely, if you do buy an entire album, will you play that album from start to finish on your iPod to fully appreciate it as a whole.

I find myself doing these things and have realized I do not appreciate musicians or albums as a whole the way I used to. Or music in general for that matter. I find that our generation of multi-taskers, over-diagnosed with ADD, and dependent on technology has been giving up on CDs. I bought two CDs today by one of my favorite artists and the quality of my life has immediately improved. There's something about holding a material manifestation of the actual music that makes the experience more personal. Leafing through the booklets adds to the experience as well. Additionally, there is a reason why the artist chose to put the songs in that specific order... iPods and MP3 players don't provide the same experience as CDs or even records. Buy a CD, put it in a CD player (not on your iPod) and listen to it from start to finish and fully get to appreciate the artist. DO IT!

Wolvarine a Disappointment. But Not Really

I got to watch the movie, Wolvarine, which is set to be released in theaters in May. The beginning is crazy and got me really excited but the movie as a whole left me feeling disappointed and very unsatisfied. The story was kind of lame. However, Hugh Jackman is looking sexier than ever and it is reason enough to pay money to see this in theaters and it's definitely an exciting movie.

The L Word Final Recap

The interrogation tapes for "The L Word" have ceased to continue. They are no more. Instead, SHO.com posted an interview with creator and writer of the show, Ilene Chaiken. She answers some good questions, but it still seems that the answer of who killed Jenny will continue to be at large. Forever. Ilene discusses why the writers chose for Max to be pregnant, was Jenny ever forgiven and why they decided to create Tasha's character as a lesbian in the military (which I happen to think was one of the best story lines teased out on the show.) Here's Part 1 of the interview with Ilene. I'm assuming the second part will be posted next Monday.

Super sad news. Bea Arthur, also known as the fabulous Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls, sadly passed away yesterday, April 25th, after her battle with cancer. I'll always be a big fan of hers. War Dance - A Must See!!

I recently watched the documentary, War Dance, and I recommend it for all. It has won a number of awards including the Sundance award for directing in a documentary and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2008. To quickly summarize the film, it follows a northern Ugandan dance team comprised of children living in refugee camps after rebels killed their parents and left them orphaned, and often recruited them as rebels as well. The film not only includes the children retelling, often for the first time, their own stories, but then follows them to the the Uganda national dance competition. To actually hear the stories from the children themselves is unique and heartbreaking, but it is their strength that is most moving and inspiring. Dancing is always awesome and good for you! It's Earth Day tomorrow! Everybody should do something, even if it's small and eco-friendly, to celebrate tomorrow. Apparently, according to the New Yorker, earth day is not the same as it used to be:

The first celebration of Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, was a raucously exuberant affair. In New York, Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic. People picnicked on the sidewalk; dead fish were dragged through midtown; and Governor Nelson Rockefeller rode a bicycle across Prospect Park. Students in Richmond, Virginia, handed out bags of dirt (to represent the “good earth”); demonstrators in Washington poured oil onto the sidewalk in front of the Interior Department (to protest recent oil spills); and in Bloomington, Indiana, women dressed as witches threw birth-control pills into the crowd (no one was quite sure why). Curly Sue Is All Grown Up

I don't know why I waited so long to share to this gem. Our beloved Curly Sue is all grown up. Her name is Alisan Porter and she not only has an incredible voice now, but she has also toured with her own band, The Alisan Porter Project. Apparently she is down to earth and never wanted to be stuck in a life of fame so she stepped out of the lime light when she was young and found it was hard to get back into acting. Here is an incredible performance of Janis Joplin's Cry Baby. It's hard to understand how she's singing this song hunched over on the couch. New HBO

HBO recently began to air the new series, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, based on the novels by Alexander McCall Smith. The series stars Jill Scott (the singer), as a woman in Botswana who uses the skills her father taught her as well as the money she inherited after his recent death to start a detective agency out of the love of her country. So far I am really enjoying the show. It's funny and heartfelt. The characters are endearing and lovable and at the same time there are elements of drama and mystery. Not to mention, I love that the show is set in Africa. I recommend you watch the first episode if you can. Once you watch it for a few minutes, it's hard to see how anybody but Jill Scott could have been considered for the roll. Here's a teaser:

Interrogation Shmerrogation Update

I was thrilled that today we finally got to Alice's interrogation in "The L Word" online interrogation tapes. Apparently Alice was the one who killed Jenny. And apparently in the final episode Alice whispered to Tasha as she walked in the door "I killed her." I could understand why people say this but it's also possible that she was mumbling something else. Either way, we expected to find something out in Alice's interrogation tape, but all she had to say was that she "doesn't like to be put in a box" (referring to her bisexuality) and then says "what does this have to do with who killed Jenny," implying that she knows and/or thinks it was a murder. However, we already saw her say that line in the finale.

Venice Rocks!!

Venice has recently decided to start using a specific species of overgrowing algae from the region, instead of fossil fuels, as a renewable source for 50% of their energy needs by building a power plant fueled by this algae. This will, specifically, make their seaport self sufficient. Apparently this plant will be up and running by 2011. Sounds like a good idea to me.

In 2004 a show called "Pilot Season" aired on cable. It is a mockumentary-style show starring Sarah Silverman, playing an aspiring actress named Susan who is involved in a love triangle, along with Isla Fisher, Andy Dick and David Cross. Recently MyDamnChannel.com began to air the episodes. So far it seems mildly funny but I haven't gotten much of a chance to watch it so I can't honestly say if it's good or not. If you're at all interested here's the first episode, "That Was Then... This Is Now."

In honor of 4/20 here is a crappy picture I took of the awesome tie dye cake I made - thanks to sister blogger, Sarah. It's so delicious. To make it... Use two boxes of white cake mix, divide into 6 bowls and dye each batch, then pour one color at a time into each cake pan. I used cream cheese frosting. MMMMM. How beautiful.

Learning to Love You More

Filmmaker, writer, and performance artist, Miranda July, has started a project with Harrell Fletcher called Learning To Love You More. It is a web site and a series of non-web presentations, and now, a book. Basically this project is a series of about 70 assignments for anybody willing to participate. It seems that the assignments are meant to inspire and to release any old Joe Shmoe's creativity. Some examples of the assignments are:

Climb to the top of a tree and take a picture of the view.

Make a short documentary on a child.

Draw a scene from a movie that made you cry.

Say goodbye.

Grow a garden in an unexpected spot.

Take a picture of strangers holding hands.

Each of these assignments include a more in depth description on the site. The Book includes the completed assignments of people who participated. The web site posts completed assignments from anybody who submits as well. COOL. Sounds like a good creative outlet for those like me who are sometimes too lazy to find their own inspiration.

Fleetwood Mac kicks Pearl Jam's Ass Every Day

I was originally planning on giving a mini description of the new Pearl Jam album, Ten, that has gotten quite good reviews, but I instead decided to post another Fleetwood Mac live performance that is much more worth your time than whatever Pearl Jam has recently come up with. This particular video of one of Fleetwood Mac's greatest songs, The Chain, has a few too many cuts. It'd be preferable to be able to watch their performance unedited. However, it is exciting to be able to watch a 1987 version of Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, scary-ass Mick Fleetwood, and Lindsey Buckingham performing one of their greatest songs. (If you happen to not yet be a big fan of Fleetwood Mac, I recommend that you download The Chain. You're guaranteed to love it.)

In this video from their Only By The Night "Home Movies" collection, Caleb of Kings of Leon talks about his experience recording the heart-wrenching song, Cold Desert (which happens to be one of my favorites). He explains how pure and natural the recording of the song was at the time- more so than any other song on the album. The band began to play the music and Caleb free-flowed the lyrics from the top of his head. He describes how sad it is for him to hear himself singing the lyrics "Jesus don't love me" when he was in a particularly vulnerable drunken stupor. Caleb opens up in this video and it is nice to have insight into one of the slower songs from Only By the Night.

My friends, Julie and Liz, were lucky enough to spot SJP in New York on her way to work and they appear to be attacking her in the clip. However, SJP clearly is doing her best to let the crazy fans snap a pic but had to get away from the paps. Who wants the paparazzi revealing your every move to the public anyway? Interrogation Shmerrogation Update

Thank goodness we finally got to Bette's interrogation in The L Word which, while it told us nothing of the Jenny case, was the best one yet. When asked by Xena the Warrior Princess (who is uncomfortably sensual in her interrogations) how Tina had failed her, Bette breaks down and says "How could she not have asked me if I wanted to be the one to conceive our second child?" True that! I never even thought about that. But who cares anymore because we'll never see what comes of any of this unless they explain these issues in the lame-sounding spinoff, The Farm, starring Alice serving time in prison for the conviction of Jenny's murder. Apparently I do care...

Dan Auerbach Tries it Solo

Dan Auerbach of the blues/rock group, The Black Keys, has released a solo album called Keep It Hid and it is GOOD. Raunchy guitar. Bluesy but grungy vocals that are truly haunting and beautiful. Auerbach used minimal mics on this album to keep focus away from the details of production and to allow the live, spontaneous quality of his music come through. His attempt to avoid sounding over-produced worked. I recommend downloading Whispered Words and When Night Comes which happen to be some of the slower tracks on the album. And just for fun, here is a picture of me and my friend, Matt, with Dan Auerbach at the Soco Music Festival in Madison last summer (great performance):

Kanye West Loves Fishsticks

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood Stevie Nicks said the following on the prospect of Lindsay Lohan playing her in a movie:

That is completely insane and crazy. There is no movie in the works about my life. Nobody can do a movie about my life without me being involved... And if anybody went and made a movie about my life without my permission and without me being involved I would slam it so hard to the press that it would never do anything... I would have to so trust somebody to actually have to sit down with them and really tell them the story of my life[...] that that'll take just the right person to[...] have me feel for my heart that that will be somebody to take my story and really treat it with compassion and make a great story out of it because my life is a great story... and until that happens there will be no movie.

Atta girl!!! Not only is Lindsay Lohan a less-than-mediocre actress (and if somebody were to play Stevie Nicks it damn well better be an incredible actress), but what the hell does she know?!
